Our communities are invited to participate in Operation Christmas Child this year. The purpose is to fill shoe boxes for needy children around the world by Christmastime. You may pick up the shoe boxes at Gifts of Grace in Gladbrook and the Gladbrook United Methodist Church, fill them with supplies (see list below), and return them to Gifts of Grace by Friday, November 9. Please take labels that indicate if the box is for a boy or girl and ages 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14. Gift suggestions include: School – pens, pencils, sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps & ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring & picture books; Toys – small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch a Sketch, toys that light up or make noise (with extra batteries), Slinky; Hygiene Items – toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag), comb, washcloth; Other – hard candy & lollipops (double bag all candy), mints, gum, T-shirts, socks, ball camps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries). Do not include war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate or food; liquids or lotions like hand sanitizers; breakable items; or aerosol cans. Personal Note - You may write a note to the child and a picture of yourself or your family in an envelope. If you include your name & address, the child may write back. Place a rubber band around each closed shoe box. If possible, please donate $7 per box to cover shipping & other project costs; if not, we will appreciate the shoe boxes. An organization may want to donate money as a Christmas project. Marilyn Willits, 641-486-2244, from Evangelical Free Church, Marshalltown, is one of the coordinators (www.samaritanspurse.org). Over 8 million boxes will be given out to needy children all over the world. Thank you for your help!
