Another year of choir has rounded the corner again! Everyone is in for a special year of music here at the Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School! There will be two choirs this year (subsided from the GR singers), which consist of the Cantori Choir and the Concert Choir. You may formally know these choirs as the Girls Choir and Mixed Choir. Cantori Choir is open to any freshmen and sophomore girl, and Concert Choir is open to any girl in 11th and 12th grade, along with any guy in grades 9-12th. Students meet every other day for choir class, and also attend small group lessons outside of class time within every six-day school rotation. Choir is a great opportunity to expand your talents and enjoy the pleasure of music with others! In addition to everything else going on in the choir world, a select amount of Gladbrook-Reinbeck students will be participating in a completely new opportunity this year. A group of six students have decided to audition for All-State this school year. This will be the first time in many years that Gladbrook-Reinbeck will be represented at the All-State Auditions. These ambitious musicians include; Cortney Crozier, Breanna Schlichtmann, Aaron Shouse, Braden Heithoff, Rebecca Franksain, and Shelby Yates. The state of Iowa is divided into six sections, based on state location. All the participating schools in your sectioned district (ours being North Central) will travel to your All-State Audition location (ours being Hampton) and audition a capella as a quartet, duet, or soloist in front of a judge. From the seven music selections, you will perform randomly chosen sections of different pieces. For each singing part, only 150 high school students are chosen. That means, after an estimated 6,000 students audition, only 600 will be chosen. If you are chosen afterauditions, then you have qualified to be apart of the 2012 All-State Festival. It also gives you bragging points to say that ‘you were one of the best 600 singers in the entire state of Iowa’. In preparation for All-State Audition day, the seven students at Gladbrook-Reinbeck have 4:00-5:30 practices after school every Monday and Wednesday, along with the occasional two-hour practice on Saturday mornings. Each student has been given a CD to practice with, which includes recordings of the Wartburg All-State Work Camp choir singing the ensembles, and piano tracks with just your part’s notes. Students are strongly encouraged to practice with their CD every spare moment they get, and two hours worth on the weekends. In addition to practice, many of the students are starting to plan before and during the school day individual practices with their choir director, Mrs. Amanda Bridges. As crunch time starts to bears down, everyone is working their hardest to earn a spot in that All-State Choir. Here are a list of the upcoming choir events that you won’t want to miss: October 6th: “Real Men Sing” Festival at Wartburg College (open to men grades 7-12) October 18th: High School Fall Concert at 7:30 p.m. October 20th: All-State Auditions in Hampton November 15-17th: All-State Festival
