NEW SHARON - One week after Southeast Webster-Grand ended its 53-game losing streak in Garwin, the GMG football team snapped it own 26-game skid with a 27-24 victory over North Mahaska with the go-ahead touchdown as time expired. The Wolverines (1-1) had not won since Sept. 18, 2009, but got over the hump when Austin Vaughn’s pass sailed through the hands of a pair of Warhawk defenders and into the awaiting arms of Bryce Newcomb. The 38-yard scoring pass was not the plan, exactly, but it did the job. “The goal was to get the ball to the 25 because we have a good kicker,” said GMG head coach Kyl Gillespie. GMG led 14-6 at the half but had to rally past North Mahaska (0-2) after the Warhawks went ahead 24-21 on Karson Stodghill’s second TD run of the game with 58 seconds left. “They had a determined look in their eyes,” Gillespie said of his squad. “You couldn’t tell who’s night it was but it ended up being ours.” Vaughn finished 9-for-14 passing for 106 yards with the game-winning touchdown. Luke Petty made five grabs for 65 yards. Brock Fisher had touchdown runs of 4 and 17 yards and finished with 62 yards on eight attempts. Blake Warren gained 117 yards on 19 carries with a 35-yard scoring scamper that gave GMG a 21-12 lead with 1:55 left in the game. The Wolverines’ starting tailback Lansana Mohr was lost for the season with an ACL injury, according to Gillespie. Vaughn led the GMG defense with 11 tackles while Matt Smith and Ryan Spurlin added nine stops apiece. The Wolverines remain on the road next week with a non-district game at AGWSR (2-0) in Ackley.
