Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Zachary Brown By Margaret Thomsen

July 13, 2012

The Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held for Zachary Louis Brown on May 27. The ceremony took place at the Threshold Learning Center in northeast Zearing, IA. Zachary is the son of Eric and Diane (Thoms) Brown of Zearing and the Grandson of Harry and the late Marilyn Thoms of the Gladbrook area. The ceremony took place on the bridge that Zachary’s older brother, Will, built for his Eagle Scout project. This is also the place where Zachary made the crossing over ceremony from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. The Eagle Award is the highest rank in Scouts and less than four percent of all Scouts in the United States reach the Eagle rank. The honor is the culmination of many years in Scouting. The three Brown Brothers – Will, Sam and Zachary – are an outstanding representation of Scouting as all three have attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Requirements for the Eagle rank include earning twenty one merit badges, twelve of which are specified. The Scout must have attained the Life Scout rank and served in a troop leadership position. The project Zachary did for his Eagle Leadership rank was to produce and place emergency escape routes for the NESCO High School in Colo. Zachary worked with high school administration to produce and place all new emergency escape routes for the entire building. These replaced the ones which had been there for more than 30 years. The project was completed last fall, but the ceremony was delayed until all of Zachary’s family could be in attendance. Sadly this was the last official event for Troop 168. The Charter was surrendered as of December 31 because of a lack of boys to meet the program requirements. Eric Brown said, “We are very proud of all three of our sons in accomplishing the rank of Eagle Scout. Zachary has worked long and hard, and has had the help of his parents, brothers, fellow Scouts and leaders in making this life goal a reality.” The Welcome was presented by Committee member Bev Chance and the Eagle Scout Roll Call was given by Jim Chance, Senior. Rev. Mary Jane Button-Harrison gave the Invocation. The Eagle Scout Challenge was given by Zachary’s brothers, William and Samuel Brown. Presentation of Awards to Zachary and his parents was conducted by Scoutmaster Tommy Chance. The Benediction was given by Rev. David Digby. A reception for family and friends followed in the Zearing Christian Church Social Hall.
