Northern-Sun Print
The 2012 Corn Carnival Collector’s Fair was a huge success with 24 collections in the two rooms. The theme “90 Years of Family Fun” was portrayed with toys from five generations: Ella Sievers, Hollis & Erma Haack Sievers, Craig & Karen Handorf, Angie Handorf Lookingbill, and Katelyn &Will Lookingbill. These heirlooms are the treasures of Karen Handorf. Also portraying the theme was the salt & pepper collection of the late Zelda Storjohann displayed by her granddaughters, Becky Zink and Kathy Miell. Zelda had a “zillion” sets and many enjoyed looking at her collection. Taking the lookers down memory lane was all the yearly Corn Carnival t-shirts kept by Deb Koester. Kris Gilchrist-Dull shared her collection of family and friends quilts of all sizes in the Legion Room. Each one was unique and beautiful. Also in the Legion Room, Marie Benda, displayed four place settings, “Clowning Around”, “Spring Fling”, Stitching in Time” and “Diva Party”. Marie is loaded with artistic talent. One unusual collection was the Dionne Quintuplets memorabilia of Yvonne Fry. Yvonne was named after Yvonne Dionne. Another unusual collection was the “Cardavista Mourning” (related to the 18 century mourning) pieces of Kelly Schott. Kelly is a 18 & 19 century history buff. Rev. Barb Muhs shared her “Autograph” pieces. Including a signed baseball card of James (Cool Papa) Bell, the first Black baseball player inducted into Coopertown. The committee was happy to see Rick Foster walk in the door with his Roy Rogers collection. Many of us had a huge crush on the “King of the Cowboys”. In honor of the 200th anniversary of the United States, the 7-UP Co. brought out 7-UP pop cans portraying the 50 states and after all the cans were collected and stacked into a pyramid you could see a picture of Uncle Sam. This fun collection was shared by Mary & Steve McIntyre. Linda Randolph displayed her Norwegian Christmas plates given to her from Loretta Engel. June Klinefelter’s Aunt Elsie Eilers had cups & saucers, which then started June’s collection. Two tables at the Collectors Fair was alive with the red & white Coca Cola collection of Doris Gienger. She has hundreds of Cola-Cola memorabilia and did a wonderful job of displaying the very popular collection. Many love those polar bears. Several regulars of the Collectors Fair came back with different collections. Karmen Betts’ brought advertising yard sticks. Stella Betts shared her sea shells. She had sea shell jewelry as well as sand balls decorated with sea shells. She keeps expanding her collection every winter when she goes to Gulf Shores, Alabama. Eleanor Lott and her grandson, Garrett, set up a collection of old NK seed boxes and seed packets. Joyce Bern decided to bring in her key chains. Gary and Joyce collected many on their travels. We all remember the huge World Wrestling Federation collection of Morgan Brown, but this year he shared his own Taekwondo belts and honors. Marlene Aalfs shared two of her collections thimbles and cardinals. Mike and her started collecting thimbles when they traveled around the country a small but great keepsake. Marlene loves cardinals and her kitchen is accented with them. Can anyone guess who collects Canadian Geese? If you said Linda Goos you are right. Linda has a fun and huge collection of geese, that decorates here lake home. A collection of interest to the men was the duck and geese decoys and calls of Jim Thompson. Shirley Young, not only has a Dalmatian as a pet, but she is a collector of Dalmatians. A fun collection for all ages was the Disney memorabilia of Carly Heindselman. Her favorite Disney characters are Peter Pan and Nemo. Another Disney collection was Justina & Trey Eggers “Toy Store” items including toy card table and chairs. We want to thank all the participants for sharing their precious collections. We know it is a lot of work but we also know the viewers love it and it adds a great deal to the Corn Carnival activities. Our kids drawing winners for theater bucks were Ashley Sieh and Trey Eggers and adult cookbook winner was Karen Ohrt. We also want to thank everyone who came in to enjoy the collections. The Collector Fair Committee was Karen Handorf, Pauline Flamme, and Jeanne Paustian. Please consider sharing your collection in the 2013 Collector’s Fair. Remember there is no collection too small.
