Message from our Mayor

June 8, 2012
Northern-Sun Print
Let’s start this article with the Memorial Day Celebration.  Those of you who weren’t there missed a very good program.  It is great to be in a country where we are free to stand and show respect to our flag and the men and women who made it possible for us to live the free life we all enjoy.  One of the highlights of the program was the Black Hawk helicopter coming in and landing beside the Veterans Memorial.  This was an awesome sight to have one of Gladbrook young soldiers step off the helicopter.  Sergeant Brent Schmitz was there to greet both family and friends.  I’m sure all of the Schmitz family is  very proud of this young man as is all of Gladbrook.  We owe a big THANK YOU  to all of our soldiers who have served our country from Brent to Doc Schaeferle and all of those before and in between.  Also a big THANK YOU to the Gladbrook American Legion and Auxiliary and Lincoln Amvets and Auxiliary for making this Memorial Day Service possible. Now, how about the two new improvements in town?  Number 1 – the water tower is completed and painted.  I have gotten a lot of comments from people both here and from the surrounding area that think it looks great!  Number 2- if you haven’t been down Main Street this last week you haven’t seen the new digital marquee on the theatre.  It really stands out and gets your attention coming from both ways and also displays time and temperature as well as the current movie. We are just three weeks away from the 90th Corn Carnival on June 21-24 starting with the kids parade and collectors fair on Thursday.  Friday night is the Grand Parade with Darrell and Jeanne Paustian being our Grand Marshall and honoring them for the many years of volunteer service here in town.  They will be riding in a wagon pulled by six Belgian horses owned by Eric Brown followed by the rest of the parade.  Then on Saturday there will be a car cruise followed by the Gladbrook’s Got Talent Show at the theatre.  The performers this year will be a combination of young and old.  Acts will include duets of Sonya Beichley and Tessa Dinsdale, Steve and Tyler Ingham, Blaine Groth and Tessa Dinsdale along with the Handorf family and the quartet of Bob Wiese, Kevin Williams, Bruce and Merlyn Appelgate.  During intermission, there will be an auction for four quarters of drug-free processed beef along with Quilt Raffle, Merchant Drawings and Photo Hunt Prize.  You won’t want to miss this night of local talent followed at 10:30 by a large fireworks display sponsored by Luethje Sales. I won’t list all the activities going on during Carnival but there will be something going on about all the time.  Come and join us! Keith Sash, Mayor PS – Did you know that the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has only been going for 87 years!
