Dr. L. G. Schaeferle was honored Saturday, April 21, by the Board of Directors of Lake and Park Holding Corp., Union Grove Lake. Dr. Schaeferle was presented with a plaque which read
"Dr. L. G. Schaeferle
Celebrating Your 60+ Years of Serviceto the Board of DirectorsLake and Park Holding Corp."
The plaque was presented at the spring Board meeting by President Bill Fry. Dr. Scheferle says he joined the Board shortly after the end of World War II but isn't sure of the exact date.
The Board has relied on Schaeferle for guidance and historical perspective. Growing up in Garwin, he enjoys telling stories of the building of the lake. For example, with a twinkle in his eyes, Dr. Schaeferle tells the property owners next door how the property was used by the WPA workers as their latrine.
He can tell you which cabins started as half of a corncrib, which property is the oldest at the lake, and which one was moved in from Clutier.
Doc remembers having to cut brush before he could walk into his property from "C" Ave. When the lake was drained, Doc thought the lake bed would be a great garden spot only to find it was not conducive to gardening.
Visit with Dr. Schaeferle to hear these and many other stories of Union Grove Lake.
