Gladbrook Women’s Club

The Gladbrook Women’s Club met March 8, 2012, in the home of Jolene Denbow. Roll call was answered by 25 members. The secretary’s report was read and approved. The treasurer’s report was presented and will be filed with the secretary’s report. Correspondence: The club received a request from John Clausen to provide a light lunch at the Youth Center on April 28 when Trees Forever will be planting the new trees at Union Grove Lake. A thank you from Anna Mae Rohweder for the flowers was received, Thank yous from Alma Gilchrist and Neva Petersen for the balloons were read. Carolyn Groth sent a thank you for get-well card. Pat Clausen reported the 549 recipes have been received and will be sent to the printer on March 9. They will be sent back for proof reading. A sign-up sheet to help with proof reading was passed. Joan Raum, chair for the Spring tea reported the committee had a wonderful tasting party. The food has been decided as well as the entertainment. A sheet was passed around for items needed for the tables. Tickets are $20 and limited to 50. The tea will be April 29, 2012, 2:00 p.m. in the Memorial Building. The ad for the Merchants Appreciation will be $25 for a half page. President Karen Handorf read a list of merchants, adding Peterson Construction and Thomsen Equipment. Jolene Denbow reported plans are underway for the planting of the trees in April for the Pauline Halverson memorial. Shirley Miell moved and Sherry Delfs seconded to serve a light lunch for Trees Forever on April 28, 2012. Motion carried. Shirley Young, Carolyn Groth, and Sherry Delfs reported on their information regarding purchasing books or items needed for the pre-school and Kindergarten classes. Carolyn Groth brought the idea of changing the scholarship fund back to the table for discussion. Vivian LeVier moved to drop the current scholarship money as it is. Mary Jane Schaeferle seconded, motion carried. The same committee to look into more ideas and report back at the next meeting. New Business: Patsy Rinz said the Easter Egg coloring is under control for Westbrook Acres. More volunteers are needed. Patsy asked for ideas for the type of book that should be purchased as a memorial to Anna Mae Rohweder. She loved to quilt and a book on quilting was thought to be very appropriate. The Senior Citizens Dinner will be April 13, 2012. The Memorial Building is reserved on Sunday afternoon, November 18, which will make it difficult to start decorating for Holiday Happenings. Following a discussion, Sherry Delfs made a motion to keep the date of November 19 for Holiday Happenings, Mary Appelgate seconded, motion carried. Vivian LeVier representing the nominating committee reported the offices up for re-election are secretary, corresponding secretary and treasurer. Shirley Miell said the Hospice cookies are all in. Pat Clausen read the birthdays and anniversaries. John Putney was the guest speaker and reported on the Blue Ribbon Foundation and its impact on the Iowa State Fair. John has headed this group since 1992 when it was founded as Executive Director. The Blue Ribbon Foundation has brought in millions of dollars since its founding therefore allowing many wonderful improvements to the fairgrounds, such as the Jacobson Arena. The World Percheron Horse Show was held there in 2010 and were so impressed with the facility they have requested that this facility become their permanent location for the annual show. This group generated thousands of dollars to the City of Des Moines. John said there are many new and exciting plans in place for some great improvements to the Fairgrounds. John presented a most interesting and informative talk. President Handorf adjourned the meeting by reading a saying about planting a spring garden. A delicious lunch was served consisting of a variety of finger sandwiches, mixed nuts and coffee. Hostesses included Shirley Miell, Patsy Rinz, and Karen Pieper. The next meeting will be a luncheon held at Independent Living on April 12, at 11:30 a.m. Members are asked to bring a salad and Board Members will furnish the hot dishes.
