GMG High School Speech Team brought home eight I Ratings at State Individual Contest in Clinton on March 10. Four students also brought home four two ratings. It was a fantastic day for the team. The students appeared before a panel of three judges. The rating is averaged. Receiving straight I ratings were: Kyle Barloon - Spontaneous; Kyle Barloon – Improv; Caitlin Appelgate – Prose; Malaina Burn – Original Oratory; and Siera Richter – Storytelling. Receiving a mixed I were: Austin Groth – Radio News; Peyton Mannan – Poetry;and Mackenzie Burt – Prose. Receiving a mixed II were: Malaina Brunn – Storytelling;Ella Gruen – Prose; and Kenna Krier – Storytelling. And a straight II went to freshman Kenna Krier in Improv. These students are to be congratulated as they have survived District competition and had the opportunity to perform at State. They are also to be recognized for their risk taking. In Improv and Spontaneous they draw a topic , have three minutes to prepare and then perform a five minute presentation. In Radio News they are given a packet of new information and are given 30 minutes to prepare a four to five minute radio broadcast. Original Oratory is writing your thoughts and ideas in a convincing manner. The Prose and Poetry performers had lots of choices in their selections – serious or humurous, factual or satirical. And all performers spent countless hours in early morning, noon and after school practices with the coach. Thank you to the parents for driving all the way to Clinton to support the performers. That is tremendous! A number of the team traveled with the performers to support and learn new ideas. Those students are to be commended as it was a really long day! Special thanks go to Mr. Lastovka and Mrs. Barloon for taking over for the day and spending about six hours riding on the bus. Our driver was Mr. Spurlin and we thank him. Coach Thomsen was attending her daughter, Susan’s wedding. It was a very good day!!
