Thompson earns unanimous First Team selection In its first year in the West, South Tama claimed the NICL West girls’ basketball championship and now the Trojans also have the Outstanding Player of the all-conference team in Madison Baier. The South Tama senior center Baier averaged 16 points to go with NICL West-highs in rebounds (nine per game) and blocks (three per game). Baier, an Iowa State University recruit, was one of five unanimous first team selections on the all-NICL West team. The Trojans went 13-1 in league play. STC senior Kendra Bradley averaged nine points per game and was second on the team in both assists and steals on her way to first-team recognition. Abby Nuese of East Marshall, McKenzie Shipley of West Marshall and Paige Thompson of Gladbrook-Reinbeck each were unanimous first team selections and each were on the second team in 2010-11. Nuese was the top scorer in the NICL West (16.5 points per game for the season and 17.8 ppg in conference games). She also led the conference in made 3-point field goals (41) and free throws (112). Shipley is the leading scorer for state tournament qualifier West Marshall at 15.4 points per game. Shipley’s 114 assists for the season led the league. Thompson averaged 15.5 points to go with 4.5 assists per game before her season was cut short by injury. Sam Meyers of Grundy Center was selected unanimously to the first team as she led the Spartans in scoring (15.4 ppg, fourth in the NICL West) and rebounding (8.9 rpg, third in the NICL West). Meyers was joined on the first team by teammate Heather Hook (12.5 ppg and 7.4 rpg). The second team has six seniors (Sarah Frisch of Grundy Center, Addi Kickbush of Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Courtney Amundson of BCLUW, Kourtne Smith of South Tama, Chelsea Whitmore of East Marshall and Alana Mairs of South Hardin) and one junior (McKenna Hotopp of West Marshall).
