GMG Speech Team attends State By: Margaret Thomsen
February 17, 2012
State Large Group Speech Contest was scheduled for February 4 at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids. The weather was icy and the coach felt the safety of the students was top priority. So the decision was made for the team to stay home. Mr. Lastovka lives close to Cedar Rapids and took the Radio Broadcasting CD with him on Friday. He got it delivered to the Cedar Rapids contest. A I rating was received by Austin Groth, Madi Van Gundy, Alix Hesmer, Jaci Johnson Dillon Slingluff, Luke Wrage and Logan Burt. On Monday the team received an invitation to participate in a make-up contest at Ankeny on February 11. Senior Improv with Kyle Barloon, Malaina Brun, Madelyn Newcomb and Devon Schuett received straight I ratings. Their draw was “Lost in the Woods”. They enacted a couple and a jilted girlfriend out for a weekend of camping. Short Film with Kyle Barloon, Luke Wrage, Alex Steiner, Jasey Roberts and Melody Beane also brought home a perfect I. This is an experimental area where students create a five minute film of any content. The group tried several venues and all kept failing. Finally Kyle put together a delightful edition of Trials of Film-making. The message being, it is not the rating, it is what you learned and having fun that really matters. Ensemble Acting with seniors Malaina Brun and Siera Richter had the audience chuckling as they portrayed two middle aged “Lutheran Ladies” dealing with hot flashes and life on the farm. The sophomore foursome of Caitlin Appelgate, Jennifer Borota, Mackenzie Burt and Abbie Duden delighted the crowd with “Like, Wow Mrs. Hoover”. Both acting received straight II ratings. To close out the day the sophomore Improv team of Abbie Duden, Mackenzie Burt, Jennifer Borota and Caitlin Appelgate drew the situation of “Lost at the Mall”. The quick thinking group soon had us in the land of Harry Potter and Narnia. They were awarded a mixed II rating. Thank you to Mr. Lastovka for always supporting us and to the parents and families who came to watch us perform.
