Gladbrook Auxiliary News

The Gladbrook Legion and Auxiliary welcomed a large group of Junior members to their Wednesday evening, December 14 meeting to wish them a Merry Christmas and to enjoy the holiday program they share with us. The evening started at 6:30pm with a hamburger/hotdog/salad/bars meal served by Kathy Vavroch, Jackie Sherman, Cynthia Eggers and Claire Handorf. It takes a lot of food to fill hungry kids and they were not bashful. Lisa Reinhard then had a short practice session for the program and we all gathered in the Legion room as the 20-25 junior members sang and acted out the ’12 days of Christmas’ with word variations. It was delightful. June Bessman accompanied them on the piano and also for several Christmas carols. We sang ‘Silent Night’ by candlelight ending with ‘Rudolph’ and ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’. Jeanne presented each of them a traditional Christmas ornament and invited all Juniors to the annual movie outing/pizza party later in the month, a treat from the Auxiliary. Lisa announced that she was retiring from her chairmanship of the Christmas program…she has done a great job! The groups reconvened for their regular meetings with six officers answering roll call for the Auxiliary. Jeanne reported that 19 members of ‘40&8’ were served by Group # 7 with chairs: Marcia Schmidt and Pat Oettchen, on November 16. The Veterans Day evening was well attended with all enjoying the experiences of our volunteers on the Honor Flights this summer and from those who were honored. The Auxiliary ladies made 300 plus popcorn balls for the Commercial Club Santa Sacks again on Monday, November 28, with Karen Pieper using Old Dutch hulless puffs to make carmel corn for the Westbrook residents. Children and Youth Chairman, Joan King, Becky Fish and Jeanne were instrumental in organizing a new project this year. They had a Kids Shopping Session of slightly used donated items to be chosen by community children to give to 10 family members or friends. The items were displayed on tables in the Legion Room on Thursday and Friday, Dec 8-9, ready for the ‘shoppers’ at 9am-2 on Saturday, Dec 10 along with the Lions Soup Day. It was a very successful and fun venture as the kids helped wrap their ‘purchases’ and couldn’t wait to see if Grandma would like that special gift they had chosen. They are already planning for next year, but have a few suggestions. Start saving those gift sacks (it speeds up wrapping and are good for odd shaped items), more gifts for men, pre-teens and toys. Please, no clothes. The Senior Citizens dinner was served under Community Service Chairman, Karen Pieper at the City Centre amidst the Festival of Tree on Friday, December 9. Fifty nine Seniors enjoyed a delicious meal of wedding potatoes, ham, sweet corn, broken glass salad, mint ice cream and a choc cookie. They even received a favor made by the Juniors and a box of candy. The Legion will host their annual Soup Appreciation meeting for the Auxiliary and we have invited the G-L Ambulance Crew, along with the Gladbrook and Lincoln Volunteer fire depts, on Monday, Januray 9, 2012. Bring a bowl and an appetite for the 6:30pm meal. The Auxiliary will also have an initiation program as we welcome our new senior members that evening. They are Joyce Bern, Kim Halverson, Betty Schmidt and June Klinefelter. The informal meeting adjourned with the annual take-away gift exchange. Christmas is here and we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year.
