Gladbrook’s “KIDS’ SHOPPING DAY”… A Truly Wonderful Day!

December 16, 2011

The good folks in our community worked together to honor Jesus on His birthday by serving the children and families in the Gladbrook area. The plan was to create an opportunity for our area kids to be personally involved in choosing, wrapping, and giving gifts to their family members. We knew that in giving a simple gift, our kids could more fully experience the joy that caring for others brings. It was also the perfect time to remind them of the precious gift God gave to the world on the first Christmas. Dozens, and dozens, and dozens of eager kids streamed in the doors of The Gladbrook Christmas Store early Saturday morning. The sights and sounds inside were heartwarming. Each child began their morning by creating their shopping list. They received a homemade shopping bag to put their gifts in, and then began to shop for just the right gift for each family member. The youngest children were joined by an adult buddy to help them maneuver their way through the rows and rows of gifts. There was only one person they couldn’t choose a gift for, and that person was them self. This Saturday was a day “to be thinking of others… like ma-mas and pa-pas and sisters and brothers!” After gifts were chosen, the kids headed to the wrapping tables to choose paper and ribbon that would add a special touch to their presents. Parents were proudly watching as their children looked over all the items and then selected just the right gifts for people they loved most. (One very patient dad stood at the back for at least 2 1/2 hours!) You could hear volunteer helpers reminding children to tell Jesus, “Happy Birthday!” when they said their prayers that night. The kids responded, “We will!” At the end of the day you could hear two Middle School girls and one of the volunteer wrappers singing “Silent Night” together. All through the day there was a soft buzz of voices, spurts of laughter, and many examples of kindness, hope, and love. It was proof positive that the Lord was present in this place… As Santa says in Clement Moore’s, The Night Before Christmas, “Merry Christmas, to ALL, and to ALL a good night.” As Jesus says in the Gospel of Mark, “Love one another.”
