President Jeanne was happy to welcome a large group of Gladbrook Auxiliary members, Westbrook Acres residents and friends to the 2pm, October 10th, meeting of the of the Auxiliary. The meeting was opened with the Pledge to our flag and a prayer by Pat Oettchen. This is the first of the two regular meetings we have planned at Westbrook so members who are residents there and those who do not care to get out in the evenings may enjoy a meeting. We welcomed 27 folks as Sue Koster introduced her speaker for this Education Month. Mr Bob Leeman, the new high school principal from Postville IA gave us a bit of his personal educational history and then explained the new technical concept of laptop computers that was introduced to G-R students this year. 220 laptop computers were leased to be used by each student for $50/yr. These, in time, will hopefully replace the need for textbooks as they are costly and need to be updated every couple of years. Each student is responsible for their laptop and may take it home for family use. Under the lease program, the computers are replaced every 4 years. Lower grades were introduced to the IPOD, but these are only used in school. We all agreed that school and education has certainly changed since many of us attended years ago. The minutes of the September meeting was read and approved. There was no treasurer’s report. Gladbrook has turned in 185 members to date. Jeanne announced the coming events. The Auxiliary will be serving the Senior Citizens at the Memorial Bldg on Friday, October 14. Reservations are needed to Pat Oettchen. The Third District Fall Conference will be held at the IVH on Saturday, October 15 with the Auxiliary meeting in the Whitehill Auditorium with 8am registration. The Juniors made favors for the Ronald McDonald House in September and met on Oct 8 to make favors for the Sr Citizens dinner. They meet at Westbrook where resident members assist them with their activities…a delight to all. Elberon Unit will be hosting the Tama Co Presidents Halloween Party on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 7pm. All past Unit Presidents of Tama Co are invited and Gladbrook will carpool, so call Jeanne or Jolene if interested in a ride. The IVH Halloween Dance will be on Oct 31 with escorts needed by 1pm. Our next meeting will be the Veterans Day Potluck with a date change! We will be meeting on Tuesday, November 22 at 6:30pm with State, District and Co Commanders as our guests. A very interesting program is planned by escorts from the Honor Flights taken this summer. We are reminded that the next County meeting date is also changed to Friday, November 18, 6:30pm at the Meskwaki Tribal Center. And on Saturday, November 19, Gladbrook will be hosting the Past Department Commanders membership turn-in. Pat Oettchen reported that the VA&R sewing days were the best ever with 67# of carpet materials, cut, sewn and rolled for the IVH rug looms. She reported good help and lots of materials yet to be sewn. The meeting was adjourned with prayer and all singing God Bless America with Sue Koster at the keyboard. A variety of delicious cakes were served by Joyce Bern and Shirley McCright as we all enjoyed visiting with the residents who came out to join us.
