It was a gorgeous September football night on Monday the 12. The Aplington-Parkersburg Falcons made the trip to the Pit in Gladbrook for a battle of two pretty good football programs. It was a night we knew we needed to be ready because very rarely do you anything other than the Falcons “A” game when they take the field. They have a very proud tradition at A-P but we also have a lot to be proud of also. The table was set for a great match up. The game did not start as we would have liked as the Falcons took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown for the early lead. Sorry to say but this set the tone for the rest of the night. We never really got anything going as A-P had their way with us. Every time we would get a little something going, we would fumble or turn it over on downs. They made all of the big plays and we just did not. You will have nights like this once in a while but we compounded it by getting mad or feeling sorry for ourselves instead of going out there and really bearing down and playing hard. We will learn from this and get better. When things go bad, that is when we really have to strap it on tight and compete and make good things happen. Many things in a football game can not be controlled but one thing each of our players can control is effort. This is crucial if we want to become a good football team. It will take every one to accomplish this. This is a good group of kids and we think they will get this taken care of. A-P cruised to a 42 -0 victory which drops us to 1-1 on the year. We ended up with 105 yards on the ground and 93 through the air but just could not get into the endzone. Defensively, Braden Trepp played a solid game with 7 tackles followed by Jake Peters with 5. Pete Meyers 4, Cameron Clark and Wyatt Swanson 3, Dustin Dinsdale and Phil Zimmerman 2, Shawn Dugan, Chase Clark, Bennett Petersen, Luke Holman, Joey Linder, and Tyler Bovy all had 1 stop each to finish off our tackle stats. Phil recovered 3 fumbles and Wyatt picked off a pass for us also defensively. Fresh-Soph Rebel Football On Tuesday we made the trip to Wapsie Valley to take on the Warriors. WV has had much success the past few years so we knew we would be in for another battle between the lines. You never quite know what to expect with a relatively long bus ride but we were hoping for the best. We also were after some redemption from one night earlier against A-P. Sadly to say this game started off in not the exact way we would have wanted it to. We put the ball on the ground numerous times in the first half and WV would capitalize. We trailed 28-8 at the half but had given up 2 short scores because of turnovers. WV then added one more touchdown in the second half to make the final difference of 34-8. Our scoring play came on a long screen pass from Brady Kuehl to Jake Peters. We also had defensive score with a tackle in the end zone by our defensive line. We ended with only 100 total yards for the game and we put the ball on the ground a whopping 8 times. We have a few things to clean up but these guys will respond. The coaches will work with these guys and there is no doubt they will improve every time out the rest of the year. Jake lead the way with 12 tackles followed closely by Braden Trepp with 9. Logan Phillips 5, Luke Holman 4, Tyler Bovy and Cameron Clark 3, Bennett Petersen, Austin Lott, and Logan Flamme 2, Noah Ohrt, Bryce Ehlers, and Dirk Thesing all recorded one tackle each. This moves our season mark to 0-2. Our next action will be Monday September 26 at Dike New Hartford for a JV game at 6 pm. We then will host AGWSR on Thursday September 29 at 6:45 pm. See you on the sidelines.
