The annual joint installation meeting with the Garwin Auxiliary was held on Monday, July 18, 7pm in the Memorial Bldg. The meeting was postponed due to a disastrous wind storm that went across central Iowa early Monday morning, July 11, doing major damage to Marshall, Tama and Benton Counties. The group was welcomed by President Jeanne Paustian with flags presented by Louise Ulch and Becky Fevold and the POW/MIA banner placed by Margaret Griffin. The Pledge was recited and meeting opened in form. The character was draped in memory of our Co-President Marilyn Thoms with both her daughters, Becky Fevold and Dianne Brown able to attend. She was a very active 66yr Auxiliary member and her devotion to the organization and our veterans will be missed. A scholarship in her name will be given at the 2012 Girls State session for her help with that program. The Garwin Unit joined us for our meeting as plans for the IVH Picnic were discussed. Each Unit is to provide 2 chix (Jeanne), 2 Pies, (Sue and Joyce S), plus Gladbrook to have 2 doz deviled eggs (Margaret G) and fresh corn (Jolene). The County will furnish ham balls. The County School of Instruction will be held here in Gladbrook on Tuesday, August 23 7pm. Correspondence was read with a thank you from Steph Dilly for her Auxiliary Unit Merit Award, from th Corn Carnival for receiving third place with our float entry and from Karen Pieper for recognizing her work with the Senior Citizens Dinners. She reported that from 50-73 guests have have been attending as they were served a Hawaiian Luau by the PUCC Sr Y F in May, and a 4th of July chicken dinner by a volunteer group. August will be a time off with the September 9th meal being served at 11:30am in the Independent Living dining hall by the staff at Westbrook. It was voted to increase the meal costs to $5. The Auxiliary will host in October again, as always: make reservations, no table service necessary and watch the paper for details. Installation of officers was conducted by Jolene Denbow with Dianne Brown serving as chaplin and Sue Koster at the piano. Jeanne Paustian will continue as president; Trudi Scott as Vice-pres in charge of programs; Jolene as Secretary, Priscella Crumley as treasurer (not present); Joyce Swangel as chaplain; Karen Pieper as historian; and Louise Ulch and Margaret Griffin serving as Sgt at Arms. Jeanne will hold her Unit School of Instruction at 6:30 before the September meeting on Sept 12. Angela Wrage was present to receive her first place Class V award in the Americanism Essay Contest with her entry sent on to Central Division. She also received an Iowa Department scholarship award. Department awards received by the Unit this past weekend at the State Convention were passed out to recipients by President Jeanne. The Unit is proud of the committee chairmen and members who make Gladbrook the seventh largest unit in Iowa with a membership of 257. We received several awards in Americanism, Music, Poppies, Community Service, Leadership, Children & Youth, Education and received a first place award for the Gladbrook newsletter from the Iowa Press Assn. Pat Oettchen, our VA&R chairman, is planning a fall sewing session for Thusday and Friday, September 29 and 30th. We have lots of materials already and welcome any clean cotton goods, sheets or jeans to rip, sew and ball for the rug looms at the Iowa Veterans Home. This is a fun, social project and we welcome volunteers and sewing machines too. Our next meeting will be our August membership brunch 9am-11am as we gather to pay our 2011-12 dues. They are still $15 with Junior membership at $3 and can be paid anytime to Jeanne at PUCC or Jolene at 705 Grand St, Gladbrook. With no further business, the meeting adjourned with the retirement of the flags. The Garwin Unit served a delicious ice cream and pie treat on this very hot evening.
