SKYPE For Soldiers Project

July 15, 2011

The fundraising project for the SKYPE Internet access for the Iowa National Guard in Afghanistan was a complete success. The Tama County American Legion Posts and Auxiliary Units would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their generous donations. We received memorial donations, donations from individuals, veterans organizations, companies, school groups, church ‘pass the hats’, businesses, and professional people, all so those serving half way around the world could have better communication access to their families back home. A pork luncheon was served in Marshalltown with JBS furnishing the meat, a pancake breakfast in Traer, and an ice cream social in the Garwin Park in June, both served by the Tama County organization. The Marshalltown National Guard was deployed for training in July 2010 and the stationed in remote outposts in Afghanistan without communication access to families. The SKYPE project not only closed the gap for them, but also gave the same internet access to others stationed in the area. Our efforts will continue to help those to follow as the Marshalltown Guard is in the process of returning to the states. The project has brought awareness to others as they seek to provide similar SKYPE internet access to their National Guard Units. Our goal was to raise $25,000, a hefty amount, with Bill McLain, father of Scott McLain of the Marshalltown Guard steering the way. As the books were closed in July 2011, the committee had successfully raised and sent $15,976.00 toward the construction of the SKYPE satellite internet system. We want to extend our appreciation to all those who donated time, food and money donations and spread the word about our efforts. We thank you, the National Guard members thank you and the families and especially the children they left behind, THANK YOU!
