NO. 13 G-R Volleyball Team Wins Three By Marcia Koester
October 22, 2010
The Rebels started off the week by playing West Marshall for another conference match up at home on Tuesday night. The girls came out and looked very good and took the first two games with scores of 25-18 and 25-20. I thought it was going to be a three game sweep, but the Trojans battled to a victory in the third game to take it 19-25.The team did not get rattled and took the fourth game 25-19. Carrie Shouse did a good job playing for Shannon Boyle who is not back from her ankle injury. It was great for the girls to get another conference victory (4-0). Jill had an outstanding night as she finished with 54 assists with an average of 13.5 assists a game. Jill continues night after night to make quick decisions to get the ball to the correct hitter for the kill. To help Jill get the ball our backrow has been playing very well. Erin, Addi, Rachael and Emily S. continue to improve on their passing and digging the ball. If it wasn’t fro their passing Jill wouldn’t be able to run an offense and our hitters couldn’t get the kills. Sometimes these ladies get overlooked by the crowd, but certainly not by the coaches or players. Emily S. had a good night with 16 kills, 14 digs and one ace. Jenna turned in another solid night with 15 kills and 4 blocks. Emily D had 11 kills. Addi had a team high of 20 digs and Erin had 15. On Thursday the rankings came out again and we fell one spot to 13. It was a great time for us to get in the rankings as it helped secure two home games in regional play for us. We will play West Marshall at home for the first game of regional play. On Saturday we traveled to NU High for their tournament. This was not our day as it was Homecoming Week, fighting injuries and sickness. As I told the girls, I would rather have this happen now and get it out of our system, so we are healthy when we are in regional play. We won our first match of the day against A-P with scores of 21-14 and 21-18. AGWSR was our next opponent and I tried to rest some girls and it did not work as we lost our second game and had to play three. We did win with scores of 21-6, 18-21 and 15-6. Class 3A No. 10 Charles City was our next opponent and we lost the first game 10-21. The second game we fell behind right away but came back and almost pulled it out, but lost 19-21. Our goal was to come out of pool play first, but instead we came out second and played Class 2A No.8 Grundy Center in the first round of the championship bracket and lost with scores of 15-25 and 9-25. We will need to play much better against Grundy Center in order to win the conference game. Jill finished the day with 60 assists and 7 aces. Jenna had 17 kills, Addi and Emily S. had 15 kills apiece and Emily D. added 14 kills. Jenna led the team with 5 blocks. Erin collected 23 digs and Addi had 13. Emily S. had 7 aces to round out the stats. The Rebels have a record of 16-7.
