JV Rebel Football by Coach Mike Bengen
October 8, 2010
It was Monday September 25. This day required the youthful Rebels to take the short trip north to Dike to take on the Wolverines of Dike New Hartford. Coach Betts and his staff have a program that many try and model after it. They play hard with a lot of intensity and they will always compete. We knew going in we would have to play a very good football game for us to come out of DNH with a victory. The game started slowly as each team was flying around and playing solid defense. Both teams were kind of getting a feel for one another in the early going. DNH then capitalized on a turnover and short field and led 8-0 at the end of one. The second quarter saw us put together two nice drives to only have them stall deep in Wolverine territory and we got no points out of either of them. DNH led 16-0 at the break on a late TD pass. The second half DNH hit us early with two more TD’s and we found ourselves down 28-0 going into the fourth quarter. We got up and came out and played well that fourth quarter and with about three minutes to go, Chase Clark broke free for a 25 yard touchdown scamper. The final score ended up at 28-6 but we saw a lot of good things on this autumn night. We competed and battled all night against a good team. It was a good effort and should give us some confidence going down the home stretch of the season. Chase led our ground game with 89 yards and a score. Trevor Trunck was 8 of 14 passing for 118 yards. Jackson Clark hauled in 4 of these passes for 48 yards and Joe Zimmereman snared 2 for 48 more yards. Chase and Dustin Dinsdale each added a catch to aid our passing attack. Jackson had a team high 11 tackles and a fumble recover. Jake Smoldt had a fine game also with 8 stops and Joe had 7 tackles of his own. Paul Chamberlain added 5, Logan Koester 4, Chase, Pete Meyers, and Hunter Raney 3 each, Shawn Dugan, Blake Kibe, and Jeremy Schlampp 2 apiece, Seth Demoret, Wyatt Swanson, Dirk Thesing, Krayton Evenson, and Colin Kern all added a tackle each to round out our defensive stat sheet. It was a good team effort and I need to send kudos out to the linemen. They played very well tonight and did a lot of good things. Jeremy Schlampp, Paul Chamberlain, Allen Heise, Tyler Wrage, Krayton Evenson, Dirk Thesing, Seth Demoret, Adam Johannsen, and Joey Linder did all the dirty work down in the trenches. These are the guys that really helps us go. Good job guys and keep improving. Our next action will be Monday October 11 at Hudson on Monday October 11. This will be a 6 pm kickoff. Come on out and see the future of G-R Rebel football. Freshmen Rebel Football On Tuesday September 28 the Freshmen Rebels made another road trip to Ackley to take on the Cougars of AGWSR. It is tough for us this year because so many of these kids played the night before in the JV game at Dike and that is a lot to ask of a kid. Playing 2 games in 2 days is tough. We also knew going into Ackley that they were also tough. They have a good group of kids as we were witness to a couple of Monday’s ago when we were handled by the Cougars in a JV game. We had to be ready and there could not be any bus lag. We needed to play good solid Rebel football for this night to be a successful one. We started out on the right foot as soon as we stepped off of the bus. The coaches thought we had a little attitude and swagger going on this night. We came out and played well and after a TD pass from Hunter Raney to Shawn Dugan and a scoop and score TD from Dustin Dinsdale, we found ourselves deadlocked with the Cougars at the half 12-12. It was as good a half of football as we had played all year and would it continue? To our enjoyment, it did and we came up with our first win, 28-18 to move us to 1-4. All things considered, this is not bad because our schedule was very difficult. We had not played well up here 2 weeks ago and it says a lot about these kids to come back here and battle for 40 minutes with a totally different outcome. We arrived and competed and that is all we ask every night out. We may not win every game but we need to compete and leave it all on the field. Keep it up guys and really build on this one. Chase Clark led the way with 54 yards on 18 carries and 2 touchdowns. He also led the team with 8 tackles. Dustin Dinsdale played his best game of his young career and finished with 32 yards on the ground, 6 tackles, and the fumble recovery and return for a TD. Hunter ended up with 21 yards on the ground and 86 passing with 1 score. Shawn caught the TD pass and Trent Geiken hauled in a reception on a big 3rd down for 36 yards. Defensively, Blake Kibe 5, Wyatt Swanson 4, Pete Meyers 3, Hunter, Shawn, Seth Demoret, Joey Linder, Dirk Thesing, Tyler Bovy, Jeremy Schlampp, and Alex Schick 2, Ryan Thran, Trent, and Adam Johannsen all added 1 stops apiece for our tackle totals. Wyatt also recovered a fumble and Dustin an interception to close out our defense. It was a great effort by everyone and a great team victory. Good job guys and keep up the hard work.
