Rebel Volleyball Girls Rated 12th! By Marcia Koester
October 1, 2010
On Thursday afternoon the IGHSAU rankings were released and the Gladbrook-Reinbeck Rebels are No. 12 in the Class 2A rankings. All the hard work at practice, extra time put in during the off-season and being in the weight room have proved worth it, as being a ranked G-R team hasn’t happened for a long time. The last time I can remember is in 1988, when that team took second at state. As we continue to reach goals, I know the girls are still working for more on their list. This team will not be satisfied until they reach all of them. They will continue to work hard in the gym to polish their skills. Congratulations on earning your ranking! On Tuesday night we played a conference game against BCLUW at home. The Comets came into the gym with a game plan. They knew we were missing Shannon in the middle and decided to keep us on our toes by tipping more than what we usually see. It was not one of our best showings of the year, but it was our third conference victory. We won in four games with scores of 25-21, 13-25, 25-17 and 25-18. Our conference record is 3-0. Our hitting percentage was not good for the night and we did not get the blocks like we are use to. So coming off a high over the weekend, we had our low on this night. Again the girls showed that they don’t get rattled and fought off the Comets. Emily S. led us with 14 kills, Emily D. followed with 10 kills, and Jenna with 7 kills. Emily D. had four blocks and Emily S. had two blocks. Jill had 38 assists for the night. The girls had 14 service aces, but also missed 9 serves. We continue to work on not giving the other team unearned points in practice. Rachael led with 5 aces, Emily S. with 3, and Erin with 3. Addi had 11 digs and Erin had 8 to round out the stats. It was an early morning for the girls as we headed off to Boone for the day. Going into this tournament we knew it was going to be a tough one as we thought we would play two ranked teams and we did. We started the day with No. 1 in Class 4A Ankeny. The girls did not have the best warm-up and started slow. After we got going we stayed right with them. If we could have gotten our serves in and not made a few mistakes other places we could have won these games. Instead we lost both games 17-21 and 17-21. Then we played Forest City who we had beaten at the South Hardin Tournament already this year, and we beat them again with scores of 21-18 and 21-18. Our serving was better in this match and Jill did a nice job moving the ball around. Our last match in pool play was against Winterset. This was a hard fought match and one that we should have not lost. We made too many mistakes during each game that cost us the match. We lost 12-21, 21-16 and 17-19. After the defensive points were calculated we still came out of pool play in second, so onto the championship bracket. Now was going to be our next biggest challenge against No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock in Class 3A. We did not give them the fight that we have had in the last three weeks or the leadership on the court. We lost 9-25 and 11-25. I feel it is important for these girls to play rated teams, as we learn what we need to work on in practice and you continue to improve playing good competition. Jill dished out 71 assists for the day. Emily S. and Jenna each had 17 kills, Emily D. with 16, Addi with 14 and Carrie with 13. Addi and Jenna had 3 aces a piece. Erin led with 20 digs and Addi had 18. Jenna had 7 blocks and Carrie had 4 blocks. Next up for us is Saturday as we go to NU High for their tournament and will play Charles City, AGWSR and A-P in pool play. Then on Tuesday night we travel to South Hardin for a conference game. On Thursday night we host a cross-conference game against Denver. We have only two weeks left of our regular season, so we hope you can get to a game to cheer the team on!
