G-R JV Football by Coach Mike Bengen
September 17, 2010
Another season is upon us. The youthful Rebels have been hard at it since the first part of August. We were ready to take the trip west to Eldora to battle someone other than ourselves. We had been practicing for three plus weeks against each other so we were anxious to see what South Hardin would have to offer us. Now on Monday August 28 our 2010 season would be underway. We knew that South Hardin has a tradition of being a very physical, well coached football team. Coach Tjaden and his staff always have their kids ready and they will put together a full game of effort. We needed to be ready. South Hardin got on the board early to take a 6-0 lead. We then counter with our first score of the year. Chase Clark found the end zone from 12 yards out to give us our first points of the new season. The game remained at 6-6 until late in the second quarter. Jake Smoldt then caught a 5 yard TD pass from Trevor Trunck. Chase added the 2 point conversion run and we lead 14-6. South Hardin came storming back and countered with a TD and conversion to lock the score at 14 at the break. The second half saw both teams not getting much accomplished. The ball stayed between the 30’s for much of the half. We put together a nice drive and Chase punched it in from 5 yards out and Jake caught the conversion pass and we lead 22-14 with 6 minutes to go. Our defense was up to the task and we held on for the win. This was a very good team effort by all of the kids. We played hard and were rewarded with a well deserved victory. Chase Clark had a nice debut as a Rebel with 85 yards rushing on 15 carries with 2 TD’s and a 2 point PAT. He also caught 1 ball for 15 yards. Dustin Dinsdale added 58 yards on 7 carries. Trevor Trunck completed 10 of 15 for 200 yards and a TD. Jackson Clark caught 5 of those balls for 129 yards. Jake Smoldt added 2 catches for 16 yards and a TD and a conversion. Joe Zimmerman added 2 catches of his own for 40 yards to round out our offensive stats. Defensively we were lead by Jackson’s 12 tackles followed by Chase’s 8. Jeremy Schlammp had 5 stops and Paul Chamberlain added 4 and Joe had a fumble recovery to round out our highlights. It was a good opening night for us and we were really happy with the effort and early execution. Our next action will be Monday September 13 at Aplington-Parkersburg at 6 pm. See you on the field..
