Freshmen Rebel Football by Coach Mike Bengen

The Freshmen began there season with a trip to State Center to take on the Trojans from West Marshall. We knew going in this was a very good class of athletes as well as good football players. They are big and fast and they are a stereotypical Coach Winkler West Marshall football team. They are fundamentally sound and execute their stuff to perfection. We knew we would have to play a flawless game for this one to go our way. Things would not go the way that we thought as we were handed a humbling 47-6 loss. This was a good football team and to meet them on opening night was tough. The good thing was our effort was there all night and that alone is certainly something we can build on. These guys get better every time they take the field whether it is a game or practice. This will be a good football team by the end of the year. Chase Clark led the way for us on the stats sheet with 98 yards on 13 carries along with 16 tackles and a fumble recovery. Hunter Raney connected with Shawn Dugan for a 63 yard TD as part of his 5 of 18 passing for 108 yards. Shawn caught 3 other balls for a total of 99 yards. Pete Meyers hauled in the other Raney completion for 9 yards. Defensively Wyatt Swanson and Pete followed Chase with 8 stops each, Shawn and Blake Kibe 5 each, Hunter 4, Krayton Evenson 3, Dustin Dinsdale, Ryan Thran, and Seth Demoret 2, and Joey Linder added 1 tackle to round out our tackles. Hunter added an interception and Pete a fumble recovery to finish off our defensive stats. Tyler Wrage, Dirk Thesing, Trent Geiken, and Adam Johannsen are also members of the Freshmen squad. They all play on the offensive line or have a spot on one of our special teams. A great effort by all of these guys’ night in and night out will pay dividends later. Keep up the hard work and positive attitude. The next Freshmen game will take place at Parkersburg when we travel north to take on the Falcons from A-P. This will take place on Thursday September 23 with a 6:00 pm kickoff. Come out and support the Rebels. JV Rebel Football Coming off an impressive win last week against South Hardin, the Rebels took the field for our home opener against Grundy Center on Tuesday September 7. You always know when these two teams get together and battle in anything, each team will leave all they have on the field or court. It is a good rivalry that always seems to get everyone jacked up and ready to go. These are always fun games and on this Tuesday night it would be all it had been tabbed for. The game started slowly as each squad was going to try and get a feel for what was going to work against the other both offensively and defensively. Our second possession we took the ball 65 yards and got to pay dirt on a 4 yard pass from Trevor Trunck to Joe Zimmerman. Trevor then followed up with another TD pass to Jackson Clark covering 22 yards. We held a 14 – 6 lead at the break. We came out the second half and stopped Grundy and proceeded down the field to take a 22-6 lead midway through the third. Trevor and Joe again hooked up for this 6 yard score. We were feeling pretty good about ourselves after this score but the Spartans came roaring right back with a score of their own to pull within 10 just into the fourth quarter. Momentum had swung to the Spartans and we had to really get back to work to hang on to this one. We did exactly that and with about two and a half minutes to go, Chase Clark capped off a very nice drive with a 4 yard run to seal the deal on an impressive 28-12 victory moving us to 2-0 for the year. It was a great effort by all of the players. It shows that hard work pays off. Keep it up. Chase Clark led the way with 159 yards on 23 carries and a TD. Trevor Trunck ended the night 12 of 22 for 174 yards and 3 TD’s. Jackson Clark caught 5 for 70, Joe Zimmerman 5 for 80, Jake Smoldt 1 for 7, and Dustin Dinsdale added 1 catch for 17 yards to add to our offensive stats. Jackson led the way with 11 stops and a fumble recovery on defense and the slobber-knocker of the night with a monster block on a running play down field. It was a Sports Center highlight. Pete Meyers followed with 5 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries. Paul Chamberlain and Hunter Raney 4, Joe Zimmerman and Shawn Dugan 3, Jeremy Schlampp 2, Alex Schick, Trevor Trunck, Jake Smoldt, Logan Koester, Colin Kern, Chase Clark, Dustin Dinsdale, Wyatt Swanson, Krayton Evenson, Dirk Thesing, and Tyler Wrage all added 1 stop each to finish off our defense. Allen Heise is also a member of this Sophomore class and is a valuable member of our special teams and also back up many of our line positions. Everyone contributes to this team whether it is when the lights are on on game night or it is slaving away at practice. This is a hard working group that comes and does their job every day. Nice start to a great year. Our next action will be a road trip to Ackley to take on the AGWSR Cougars. It will be a 6:00 pm kick on Monday September 20. See you on the sidelines.
