by Amy Jantzen, CIP What one of us doesn’t have a fond memory of mom’s cookies? Well now you can get Cookie Mom Cookies right here in Traer. Amber Freeman, Cookie Mom, recently opened a quaint shop right on Main Street. Freeman said, “It has always been a dream to open a retail shop and have a place for moms to bring their kids after school for a cookie and a glass of milk or for people to have a cup of coffee and a treat.” Freeman, along with her family has been in the cookie business for many years, working from special orders only out of her home in the North Liberty/Iowa City area. Freeman moved to Traer with her finance, Joe Pokorny, daughter, Heather, son, Luke in April. She then set her sights on fulfilling her dream. Her other daughter, Molly, stayed in the North Liberty area. Working with the Traer Historical Museum Board to set up shop in the “Winding Stairs” building, and together they got the building up to code and able to handle the commercial ovens and refrigerators. Freeman is thrilled with the character of the building, with all the original woodwork and she loves the Main Street location. Freeman specializes in decorated sugar cookies and has 500 to 600 cookie cutters on hand. Freeman also offers traditional cookies like chocolate chip, monster, chocolate chocolate chip, snickerdoodles and a very popular one to the area, oatmeal raisin. Freeman welcomes special orders, if she doesn’t have what you are looking for just ask and she can usually fill the order within a couple of hours. Also available are muffins, brownies, cinnamon rolls, cakes for all occasions and a personal favorite, breakfast cheesecake. Freeman also has edible image products where you can have your favorite picture on a cake or cookie. To help wash down those delicious treats Freeman offers a wide variety of drinks including coffee, juices, pop and of course, milk. Helping Freeman run the business are her children, Heather works full-time with her mom and Luke and Molly both join in on a part-time basis. Freeman has made the shop very kid friendly with board games available there to play and also offers wi-fi internet access to customers. Striving to make the shop comfortable and cozy, Freeman welcomes groups or individuals and offers a place to come and relax and enjoy the company of their friends and neighbors. The shop is located in the historic winding stairs building at 534 Second Street, Traer. Cookie Mom Cookies business hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon. You can place your special orders by calling 319-478-2555 or by emailing the cookiemom@aol.com. Also be sure to check out the website at www.cookiemomcookies.net. The site lists all of the products available and has great examples of her talent in the decorating field. But it would be my suggestion that you take the time to try one of the cookies, that is where they really shine. As Freemans says, “You just have to try one.” Freeman has planned a Grand Opening for her business which will take place on Friday, Dec. 11, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. She will be giving away free samples and door prizes.
