Edna Ramsey, the 2009 Lincoln Citizen of the Year was born January 3, 1931, to Gustav and Elsa Martens. Edna Martens Ramsey began her education at country school about a mile up the road from her home, approx. 4 miles outside of Lincoln. She graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1948 and attended State Teachers College (UNI). 1953 she married Jack Ramsey and the two took up housekeeping in the upstairs of the Lincoln Hatchery. Ask Edna just about anything you want to know about raising chickens and she can tell you. When Gus retired, Jack and Edna (and the three kids - Lori, Lynne and Marty) moved back to Edna’s family farm. Edna was devoted to Jack, the kids, the farm and was all about family and the importance thereof. She loved her flowers and her gardening and was also pretty handy with a gun. When the kids found a small injured hawk and nursed it back to health it was Edna who stood on the back steps, took aim, and shot a sparrow for the hawk’s meal. In 1983 Edna and Jack moved to Lincoln but continued to be active with farming. Shortly thereafter along came grandson’s Brad and Justin, who remain to this day, her ablsolute favorite boys in the world. Grandma Eddy’s kitchen is always open for business when those two are around. Edna has been a lifelong resident of the Lincoln area as evidenced by the fact that she’s only ever had one phone number her entire life! Anything for the benefit of the town of Lincoln would always have her full support. Edna was devoted to anything going on with the Lincoln Commercial Club and at the Lincoln Amvet Hall. Plenty of times she helped with food preparation, working at dances, taking collection for the annual steak fry, washing the towels, mending flags, anything that was needed, she was always busy with the behind the scenes tasks. One of the biggest parts of her life has been Salem Church of Lincoln. Over the course of 50+ years, Edna has taught Sunday School, helped with Bible School, sang at probably hundreds of weddings and funerals with Sally Stoehr, and was a member of the choir for that entire time. Since Edna has been on the Citizen of the Year committee FOREVER and knowing how Edna LOVES the limelight, it did take a little trickery to get the job done, but this year we honor her, a lifelong member of the Lincoln Community, with this award. Congratulations Edna Ramsey, 2009 Lincoln Citizen of the Year and Thank You for your many years of love for your community and support!
