The Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary hosted a Veterans Day Program at Westbrook Acres on Wed., Nov. 11th. Since 1919 Americans have been honoring men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, so we celebrated the 90th anniversary of Armistice Day or Veterans Day. Six veterans residing at Westbrook Acres were honored with a poppy flag corsage and a lighting of a candle in their honor. They were Harold Arnold, Loren Emke, Robert Gamble, Jack Yeomans, Chuck Julian, and Elmer Niedermann. Pianist Sue Koster played the service songs to the delight of the veterans present. They stood or waved their arms when their song was played. All joined in the singing led by Pastor Robert Doner. Co-Auxiliary President Jeanne Paustian read an article entitled “What Is a Veteran”. She then introduced the guest speaker Gladbrook Legionnaire and World War II Veteran Dale Osten. He talked about his trip on the “Honor Flight” to Washington DC. Everyone enjoyed hearing about his experience and about all the volunteers that showed their support and gratitude to the veterans. Jeanne read a verse entitle “To All Our Veterans”. Rev. Robert Doner gave a veterans prayer and the program ended with all joining hands and singing “God Bless America”. Refreshments were prepared and served by Auxiliary Community Service Chairman Karen Pieper with the help of Co-Auxiliary President Marilyn Thoms.
