The October meeting of the Ehrig-McTurk Unit #127 of Gladbrook met in regular session at 7pm on Monday, the 12th with Jeanne Paustian, presiding. Flags were advanced by Louise Ulch and Trudi Scott and the POW/MIA banner placed by Joan King. Roll call was answered by 7 officers. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved with a finance report by Jeanne. Forms have been mailed to Junior students who may be interested in attending Girls State…cost $360. Membership is going well, but we still need 3-4 new members. The Juniors begin their year as ‘fillies’ the end of September with a family potluck and all made favors for the Ronald McDonald House which were delivered by Jeanne. Karen has contacted Eastbrook Apt on plans for a party, but plan died for lack of interest. The Tama County Unit Presidents Halloween party will be hosted by the Traer Unit on Tuesday, October 27 at 7pm. Those interested in riding may meet at the Memorial Bldg at 6:30pm to carpool. Let Jolene or Jeanne know. The Third District Fall Conference will be held in Shellsburg on Saturday, Oct 31. Jolene and Marilyn are planning to attend. Lunch reservations are required. November 9, the Unit will host a 6:30pm potluck in honor of Veterans Day with Dept, Dist and County Commanders as special guests. We hope to have some of our WWII Honor Flight veterans present to tell of their trip to Washington DC and also a bit from our Girl and Boys State representatives. Hostesses are Marilyn Thoms, Becky Fevold, and Sandy Raum. Trudi announced that this Saturday, October 17, the Scouts will have their Food ingathering for the Food Pantry. Out of towners may take your donations to Trudi’s home. Sue Koster introduced Garrick Teckenburg our new G-R principal as our guest for Education Month. His enthusiasm was felt by all of us and am sure it rubs off on all who meet him. He is a graduate of BCLUW, is married to a Grundy Center gal and enjoys being back close to relatives. He explained his REBEL philosophy: R for respect, E for energy, B for Brand, E for enthusiasm and L for lessons learned (if it didn’t work, don’t do it again) He went on to explain that ‘brand’ promotes what students, teachers and parents present to their community and others about their school; a neat appearance, courtesy, sportsmanship etc, all helping send a message that G-R is a good school to be a part of. School funding has been cut by the state to G-R by $320,000 effective immediately so the Board is working on ways to cut without effecting the education of our students. Garrick explained that one of the things he has appreciated is the enthusiasm of the teachers. We thank him for his enthusiasm too! The meeting was adjourned in form with all singing God Bless America. A delicious apple cake with fall decorations was served by Chris Hickman and Kathy Herink.
